Welcome to West Lothian Council Archive Blog

This blog is written by staff at West Lothian Council Archive and Records Management Centre. It is very much an attempt to allow people to see the role of the Archive within the community and the work it carries out on their behalf.

Where to Begin?

I guess an introduction is in order.

This blog will be the work of the small, but perfectly formed team at the West Lothian Council Archive and Records Management Centre. It will record and discuss, highlight and reveal the work carried out here. I think for the first blog however I will play it safe and explain the Archive's function. Time to reach for the handouts:

West Lothian Council Archive and Records Centre is responsible for locating, preserving and making accessible records relating to the history of West lothian. We hold records reflecting the history of both local government and the wider community. The collections date from the 16th century to the present day. The main collections include records from West Lothian Council, West Lothian District Council, Lothian Regional Council, Livingston Development Corporation (LDC), Bathgate Burgh, Linlithgow Burgh and numerous schools. The records come in a variety of formats such as minutes, reports, building warrent registers and drawings, correspondance, school registers and log books. The main collection from the LDC includes a large number of photographs, board drawings and architectural plans.

So there you go. A little dry and formal I agree, but it always is on first meeting isn't it? I'm sure as time goes on we will have relaxed and will be telling you about all manner of excitement. Until then, I will simply nod a respectful fairwell.
