Welcome to West Lothian Council Archive Blog

This blog is written by staff at West Lothian Council Archive and Records Management Centre. It is very much an attempt to allow people to see the role of the Archive within the community and the work it carries out on their behalf.

Twitter to the Right

Just a quick post to explain the feeds to the right hand side of the blog.
The @WLArchiveRM Twitter feed concerns itself with happenings at the Archive; projects, blog posts and various other aspects of work.

The other Twitter feed, @PoorInspector, is a recently begun journey through the decisions faced by Councillor Alexander Smith. He was the Poor Law Inspector for the parish of West Calder, West Lothian, Scotland in and around 1896. The tweets are chosen to correspond with the dates of his entries in "The Record of Application for Parochial Relief 1896-1900", one of many such volumes held here at the West Lothian Archive. In short the good Councillor would receive applicants within his office, take note of their woes and report them to the Parish Council whereby a decision would be made as to the type or amount of relief to be offered.

Lastly, there is a Flickr feed. This is in it's very early stages and currently consists of slightly left field images from around the Archive and Records stores. More images will be added from the two digitisation projects currently underway, (more information on these to come later) and from any other images that strike us as educational, informative, quirky or just plain fun.
